It all depends on the extent of support required. If it is game dependency without other underlying conditions and circumstances, we will decrease the frequency of consultations and eventually stop within reasonable length of time if the client is able to get back to normalcy of life.
At COMEBACK, we believe in finding out the root cause of what is driving the undesirable behaviour. The root cause is usually not as visible as the behaviour, which often times your child is unaware as well and takes time to uncover. When the driving factor is addressed, the desirable behaviour comes forth with a lot less pressure and tension.
If the driving factor of your child’s gaming behaviour is a circumstance that is beyond anyone’s control to change, then a lot more time is needed to help the client to overcome
Students spend a large portion of the day in school. Thus school is also an important aspect of our clients that we journey with our clients. Our psychologists work closely with the school and school counsellor to overcome the various challenges together with the family.
Yes we can help, but it will require a lot of cooperation with the family. We do house visits, especially for clients who have isolated themselves physically. A lot of patience and love is required from the family and therapy can take some time before tangible results can be noticed.
While video-gaming has well-documented positive effects, prolonged, excessive usage can cause long-lasting structural changes in the brain, especially in the executive regions. Hence, individuals with game dependency have often demonstrated increased inattention, impulsivity, and impaired control over their behaviours.
Neurofeedback therapy is thus one viable intervention that is noninvasive, non-medication-based, and empirically proven in treating disorders such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The therapy works by utilising neurofeedback to reprogram the brain in behaving toward a desired manner (e.g. reduced dependency on gaming). Clients are equipped with a device that measures brain activity (neurofeedback) while engaging in specific cognitive tasks that stimulates activity in the target brain regions. Through consistent repetition, new neural-pathways are formed that encourage desired behaviours, such as having enhanced focus and better control over impulses and behaviours. Hence, neurofeedback therapy helps shape the brains of game dependent individuals to be better equipped for mastery in both their games and real life.

This is a simple test that a gamer can do to assess your own game dependency. Please note that this is not a diagnosis as you will need a professional to confirm.
You can use this test to see which player type you are – Achiever, Guru, Explorer or Socialiser.
Understanding Games and Gamers is put together for both non-gamers and gamers. Understanding a little about game design empowers the gamer to have better control. Player motivations is explained through gamer types that are mapped to Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®.
